Facts on Smoking: World No Tobacco Day 2020


Every year, May 31 is observed as ‘World No Smoking Day’ or ‘World No Tobacco Day’ or ‘International No Tobacco Day’ on 31 May.

In the year 1987, the World Health Organization (WHO) member countries passed a resolution in view of the damage caused by tobacco, by which it was decided to celebrate the day from 07 April 1988. It was then decided to celebrate Tobacco Prohibition Day every 31 May.

This year’s theme is “protecting youth from industry manipulation and preventing them from using tobacco and nicotine”.

To celebrate World Tobacco Prohibition Day in an effective manner throughout the world, the WHO selects a particular topic every year as a central part to spread a global message to the people for greater awareness. Other promotional items like brochures, posters, flyers, press releases, websites, etc. are also made available by the WHO to members of the World Tobacco Day celebrations.

There are many forms of tobacco in the market, and people often think some forms are safe and don’t cause health problems. This isn’t true. There is no safe form of tobacco.

It’s important to know that although e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they are often classified as “tobacco products.”

Facts Related to Smoking

Most people who smoke cigarettes are victims of the misconception that cigarettes relieve stress.

No smoking

The survey was conducted to find patterns of cigarette smoking in households and among close family members. Indus Health Plus, a leader in preventive healthcare, conducted a week-long survey to understand the behavior of cigarette smokers at home.

The survey has yielded some interesting results:

There is no other smoker in the house of 51 percent of people. This is proof that seeing other people in his family has not inspired people to smoke cigarettes.

58 percent of women prefer to smoke cigarettes after having a relationship.

70 percent of men feel craving for cigarettes after having food.

About 81 percent of smokers (cigarette smokers) smoke at home, while 19 percent do not smoke cigarettes at home due to the presence of the family.

Not only this, 94 percent of women smokers and 74 percent of male smokers smoke cigarettes at home.

Balconies, gardens, bedrooms and restrooms are the most preferred places of smoking as a resting place. Among them, the balcony is the most preferred place.

When it comes to making a monthly budget for cigarettes, 33 percent of women make a budget for their smokes as compared to men.

Only 24 percent of the respondents said that they would quit smoking cigarettes to plan for the child. This indicates that most people are unaware that smoking cigarettes cause infertility in both women and men.

71.6 percent of people do not smoke. This shows that people want to improve the health and well-being of themselves and their families.

Cigarette smoking causes heart disease, respiratory problems and can also cause cancer. According to a study, one cigarette can reduce your life by 11 minutes.

What are the most dangerous things present in cigarette smoke?

It accumulates on the hairs in the lungs that prevent infection and bacteria. The chemicals present in it cause cancer.

Carbon monoxide

It reduces the oxygen present in the blood. This causes fatigue and weakness soon. Lung disease can also occur.

Oxidant gases

These gases react with oxygen and make the blood thicker, increasing the risk of stroke and heart attack.


This damages the cells of the body. It can also cause many types of cancer.

Serious Diseases Caused by Eating Tobacco and Smoking


The most common disease caused by tobacco is cancer, but the consumption of tobacco does not just cause mouth cancer. Rather, it is likely to cause many other cancers. Consumption of tobacco can cause lung cancer, bone cancer, cervical cancer and blood cancer.

Reduction in smelling and tasting power

Consumption of tobacco reduces the person’s ability to smell and taste. Tobacco destroys the glands of the brain, which helps with the mechanism of smell and taste.

For this reason, many people do not feel hungry after consumption of tobacco. Because of this, the body starts to weaken gradually.

Smelly Hair

Consumption of tobacco in our body increases the number of toxic substances. These toxic substances do not come out of the body through urine, feces and sweat.

For this reason, the body and hair of more cigarette smokers start to smell dirty. Even sometimes, smokers observe the problem of hair fall.  


There are 2 types of cholesterol in our body, one is good cholesterol and the other is bad cholesterol. A balanced amount of both keeps the body healthy.

When a person consumes cigarettes, the smoke reduces the good cholesterol in the body and increases the amount of bad cholesterol. This, in turn, increases the risk of a heart attack.


Numbers of researches have been performed on the effect of cigarettes and tobacco on fertility. Their findings showed that the consumption of tobacco weakens the ability of the body to form sperm.

The same goes for females where infertility is seen amongst the large number of females who smoke regularly. If parents smoke cigarettes or consume tobacco during pregnancy, it affects the child’s mind and health.
